Repurpose Your Artificial Plants, Flowers and Trees

I love getting a new artificial plant or flower arrangement to brighten up my home, but there are only so many places in my house that will hold more plants,  flowers, and arrangements. While artificial plants and flowers are durable and will last for years, sometimes it’s time for something new.

Maybe you’re ready to change the colors in a room or you could be moving to a new house that would look better with different plants. But what do you do with the old plants and arrangements you no longer want?

Please be aware that disposing of an artificial plant is NOT as simple as putting it in the recycle bin. While some parts of artificial plants and flowers are recyclable, the combination of plastic, wire and fabric makes it a bit impractical to take them apart and recycle them. But don’t worry, there are plenty of other things you can do with unwanted faux plants and flowers to keep them out of the landfill.

If you have an old fake plant or two that you don’t want anymore, consider one of these earth-friendly ideas for giving it new life.

Tip #1 – Give it away.

The easiest way to keep your old faux plants and flowers out of the landfill is to give them to someone else to use.

Ask your friends if they can use your unwanted arrangements or donate them to a local thrift store. If you want to make a few bucks, try listing them on your local swap and shop Facebook page or selling them in a garage sale. While the artificial plants or flowers might not work in your house anymore, they might be perfect for someone else’s. Just be sure to give them a good cleaning so that their new prospective owner will be able to envision their beauty in their home.

Tip #2 – Give it a makeover.

Take a hard look at the faux plant or arrangement you’re looking to get rid of and consider whether it could be evolved into something new.

Can you give the floral arrangement or plant a different look and/or use it in a different area of the house? Give your faux tree, like this smoke tree, a trim to create a different shape like the author of the Salvage Sister and Mister blog did.

Drop a flower arrangement in a new container or pot to give it an entirely different look or split a larger arrangement into two smaller ones for a more versatile option. You can even take two existing flower arrangements and swap some of the flowers in each to create two new arrangements.

One of the best things about artificial flowers and plants is they can be re-arranged and easily moved between containers. Don’t be afraid to try something new with a bit of whimsy. The worst thing that can happen is you don’t like it and just change it again.

Tip #3 – Move it outside.

If you have an artificial plant or flower arrangement that no longer works inside your house, consider moving it to a porch or patio.

We often forget about outside living spaces as an option for decorating. Faux plants and flowers are perfect for the outdoors because you don’t have to worry about how much sun and water they are getting. They look great without a lot of care.

Tip #4 – Take it apart and repurpose it.

Faux flowers are perfect to use in craft projects. Pull the flowers off the stems and repurpose them into something new. The options are endless.

From hair bows to bookmarks to headboards, faux flowers can be added to almost anything. One of my favorite ideas is to take the blooms off a fake flower arrangement and put them into a pretty, clear glass jar like this one. It creates an elegant look and gives the artificial arrangement new life. Check out this idea and a bunch of others from the folks at HGTV.

Using one of these ideas to give an old plant or flower arrangement new life extends their beauty and helps the planet. Let us know in the comments what your favorite way to repurpose an old artificial plant or flower arrangement is.

As always, don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
